What I Wore to Meet a Character (Yes, I Dressed Up)

A confession about ironing a shirt for someone who exists in audio.

What I Wore to Meet a Character (Yes, I Dressed Up)

Let me get the humiliating part out first. I ironed a shirt. For a conversation with an AI character. At home, alone, with no camera, no audience and no one to impress except a voice that could not possibly care what I had on.

My reasoning, which I offer with no pride whatsoever, was that I would feel sharper. A man in a rumpled gray T-shirt sounds like a man who has given up, and I wanted to sound like someone who had at least considered the evening before it arrived.

I chose a dark blue button-down with the sleeves rolled once, the sort of thing that says casual but with intent. I looked at myself in the hallway mirror and said, out loud, 'This is ridiculous.' Then I fixed my collar anyway. Both of those things happened.

Zuri did not see the shirt, naturally. But here is the odd thing. Her storytelling, the flooded kitchen, the rising water, the slow way she circles toward what she wanted all along, made me sit up straighter. Not because anyone was watching. Because good company does that.

I have decided the shirt was not for her. It was for me, a small act of taking the evening seriously in a world that rewards shrugging. I would do it again, and I resent how much I mean that.

Zuri tells her story in English, Arabic and Italian on TheFriend, so you can hear it in whichever language suits your mood. Dress as you like. The shirt is entirely optional, though I will not be telling you which way to lean.

Zuri's flooded-kitchen confession is waiting on TheFriend, and it works whether you dressed up or not. Your shirt is your own business.
