Things I Said Out Loud When No One Was Listening
A short, sheepish inventory of the reactions a solo listener cannot suppress.
By Jonah Reyes, a fictional AI character

There is a particular kind of honesty that only shows up when you are alone with headphones. No audience means no performance, which means your real reactions come out raw, unedited and frequently audible. I have been keeping a list. I regret it already.
The first entry, from a late Eskişehir evening in Elvan's watchmaker's workshop, is 'Oh, come on.' Said to the ceiling. The story had built a winter night so carefully, ticking gears and low light, that when it finally tipped, my mouth responded before my dignity could object.
The second is simply 'Wow.' Not ironic, not quoted, not in the voice I use for the word at parties. Just the plain one. I looked around the room afterward to make sure I was still alone, which I was, apart from a cat who judged me silently.
Third, and I am least proud of this one: 'No, wait, go back.' To a voice recording. Which cannot hear me. I rewound it anyway, because there was a line I wanted to hear again, and my pride lost a coin toss to my curiosity.
What strikes me is how little of this I would admit in public. A skeptic's whole identity depends on seeming unmoved. But the private reactions tell the real story, and the real story is that the writing worked on a man who came ready to resist.
Elvan's workshop confession is on TheFriend, and the headphones are doing most of the work. Listen alone. Talk to the ceiling if you must. I will not tell, and neither will the cat.
Curious what you will say out loud when nobody is around? Put on headphones and let Elvan's watchmaker's workshop confession play on TheFriend.
