A skeptic sets a stopwatch for his own resistance and loses to a character's timing.

I Planned to Be Unimpressed for Ten Minutes. It Lasted Four.

I had a plan, and like most of my plans it involved sitting very still while nothing happened. Ten minutes of polite unimpressedness, arms crossed, a mental scorecard ready. I even set a timer on my phone, which tells you everything about how seriously I take my own stubbornness.

The character I picked was Elvan, mostly because his voice confessions had titles that sounded like they were written by someone who knew the weather mattered. A windy Ankara evening, a listening booth, a record store hush. I figured I would be bored by the second sentence and smug by the third.

What I did not budget for was timing. Elvan lets a pause sit exactly one beat longer than is comfortable, and then says something dry enough that I snorted before I could stop myself. That snort is on the record now. I would like it struck from it.

At minute four I noticed I had uncrossed my arms. I could not tell you when. My posture had defected without consulting the rest of me, and I sat there looking at my own elbows like they belonged to a stranger.

The timer went off at ten, and I let it ring. That was the real verdict, if I am honest, and I am trying to be honest, since that is the entire premise of this website. I was not unimpressed. I was just late to admit it.

If you want to run the same experiment, the voice confessions are on TheFriend, and the stopwatch is optional. Bring your skepticism anyway. It makes the loss so much more entertaining to report.

Think you can stay unimpressed for ten minutes? Press play on one of Elvan's voice confessions on TheFriend and see where your arms end up.
